5 Apps That Made My Life in Thailand So Much Easier

Sawasdee Ka! When I first moved to Thailand over a year ago, I had to figure out almost everything on my own — how to pay, how to get around, how to meet people. It was a lot of trial and error. Now, after living in both Phuket and Bangkok (and traveling to Ko Samui, Chiang Mai, Krabi and more), I've found a handful of apps that genuinely make life here smoother and more seamless. Whether you're just visiting or settling in for the long haul, I hope these tips save you the guesswork I went through.

1. Pay like a local, seamlessly

In Thailand, you'll come across plenty of merchants and cafés that don't accept card payments — even some big supermarkets like Makro don't take cards. This can be a real problem if you're not carrying cash day to day. For expats coming from neighboring SEA countries, the QR payment system is probably already familiar to you (SEA banks usually support these cross-border payments). But if you're coming from outside SEA, your options are limited to cash or card — and again, not every merchant accepts cards. So it's well worth checking out these apps that let you pay by QR seamlessly.

Moreta Pay

This app helps you pay like a local, seamlessly. You can top up your wallet by debit or credit card, or connect it to your bank account, Apple Pay, SEPA Transfer, and Wise. Once your money is in the wallet, you can pay by QR across Thailand as well as other countries in Asia and Latin America. They offer some of the cheapest bank fees and exchange rates around. Moreta Pay does have one limitation — it doesn't support personal QR payments yet and only works with business QR Pay — but it's still very useful if you want to travel around Thailand or the rest of SEA.

True Money

This app is used by Thai nationals too. It offers plenty of coupons, and beyond paying merchants, you can also use it for your electricity bills, wifi, insurance and much more. It supports personal QR payments as well. However, if you're a foreigner here without a long-term visa, you can only top up your True Money wallet via 7-Eleven, Lotus, CP Fresh Mart, and True Money kiosks. To top up via a bank account or credit/debit card, you'll need to submit your long-term visa documents.

2. Get around Phuket seamlessly with Gekkon

If you're traveling to Phuket, public transport is quite limited. There's no MRT or BTS, and while there are buses, you often end up waiting a while for the schedule. Grab and Bolt are available too. But if you have a motorcycle license and enjoy riding, I'd recommend Gekkon. It's one of my favorite apps, and I used it from time to time when I was living in Phuket. You can pay by the minute, hour, day or even week — just top up credits or pay directly with your debit/credit card. There's no deposit, and no need to visit a rental shop. Just open the app, find the nearest bike, and off you go around Phuket. It's super convenient, but please ride carefully!

3. Meetup: connect and have fun!

If you're feeling clueless about what to do in Bangkok, want to make new friends, or want to connect with locals to practice your Thai, Meetup is your answer. You'll find loads of events here, from tech meetups to arts and crafts. It's a great way to connect and have fun in Thailand, with a wide variety of activities ranging from free to paid (depending on the event). You're also welcome to create and post your own event.

4. Upgrade your workout sessions with ClassPass

Another one of my favorites! ClassPass lets you hop between different classes — from yoga, pilates and the gym to spa and wellness activities. New users get 35 free credits, so you can join free classes for 14 days. It's really convenient and handy for your day-to-day workouts here in Thailand. Classes booked through ClassPass are usually cheaper than their normal price, and there's also a referral program where you can earn credits worth 750 Baht. Find your favorite class and subscribe to start earning more credits.
